Ten tips for a sharp eye photo
The quality of your source photo determines the result. These points make the biggest difference.
How to get the best eye photo
Light your eye with a flashlight held at an angle from the side. Hold the light beside the eye and aim it at the iris so it appears clearly bright and fully visible in the photo.
Don't shine light straight into the pupil. This keeps the reflection small and covers less of the iris. Make sure no large white or overexposed areas appear.
The brighter, sharper and clearer the iris is in the source photo, the more reliably IRISORA can analyse its colours and structures.
- Use a separate flashlight if possible, or the flashlight of a second smartphone.
- If possible, have a second person hold the light at an angle from the side while you take the photo.
- Hold the camera steady and focus directly on the iris.
- Photograph the eye close up, but fully visible.
- The iris must not be covered by eyelids, lashes or strong reflections.
- Avoid a direct camera flash from the front.
- Don't use filters, beauty modes or any subsequent image editing.
- A separate, well-lit photo must be taken for each iris.
1.Flashlight at an angle from the side
Hold a flashlight beside the eye and aim it at the iris at an angle. This makes it bright and fully visible.
2.Don't shine light straight into the pupil
Light from straight ahead creates a large reflection in the middle of the iris. From the side, the reflection stays small.
3.No direct camera flash
A camera flash from the front overexposes the iris and flattens its structure. Use a separate flashlight instead.
4.Main camera instead of selfie camera
The rear camera delivers more resolution and better optics. Have someone else press the shutter.
5.Focus on the iris
Tap and hold to lock focus and exposure. Without a fixed focus, sharpness often jumps to the eyelashes.
6.Open the eye wide
Raise the eyebrow slightly, don't pull the eyelid with your finger. The iris should be free above and below.
7.Look slightly to the side
Look just past the camera. This reduces reflections right in the centre of the image.
8.Consider contact lenses
Tinted lenses change the colour of the result. For an authentic image it's better to photograph without coloured lenses.
9.Take several shots
Five to ten photos in a row cost nothing. Pick the sharpest one afterwards.
